Oldham edge past Gateshead

Jonny Smith’s sumptuous curling effort sent League Two Oldham into the FA Cup second round with a tense 2-1 victory over non-league Gateshead.
Smith threatened throughout the tie and deservedly got his goal 13 minutes from time, cutting in before whipping home to prevent a first-round shock in the north east.
Liam Agnew’s superb strike had looked like giving Gateshead a shot at a replay, drilling home from the edge of the area in the 53rd minute to cancel out Filipe Morais’ opener.
But Oldham found the winner and are into the second round for the seventh time in nine seasons.
National League North side Gateshead threatened from the outset but the visitors went ahead on the half-hour when Morais headed home a loose ball from a corner.
Brad James denied Smith to keep the hosts in the game and they got their leveller after the break, Agnew fizzing past Zeus De La Paz from the edge of the area.
De La Paz then had to be sharp to save from Dominic Tear but it was three-time FA Cup semi-finalists Oldham who prevailed thanks to Smith’s moment of class, firing in his third goal of the season.
