Fylde’s FA Cup success can revive National League campaign – Jim Bentley

Jim Bentley feels AFC Fylde’s narrow 1-0 FA Cup success over Nantwich Town can revive their ailing league campaign.

Bentley jumped ship to the struggling Coasters after 17 years at Morecambe and his honeymoon period continued with a scrappy cup victory.

National League Fylde – who sit two tiers above Nantwich in the non-league pyramid – earned safe passage through Ryan Croasdale’s deflected effort just before half-time.

After a second clean sheet in a week, Bentley believes their cup run can inspire improvement in the league.

“I think there’s more in the locker – going forward we can do more,” he said.

“The big thing for me is the record defensively this year hasn’t been good, but suddenly we’ve kept two clean sheets in a week.

“To build foundations you’ve got to start somewhere and that was limiting the goals against.

“The league programme needs to pick up.

“We need to start pulling ourselves away from the battle we find ourselves in.

“Winning any game builds momentum and particularly when you do it in the cup.”

The Northern Premier League hosts struggled to create chances but manager David Cooke was proud of their performance.

“I think Jim Bentley will be the first one to say what a great performance came from our football club,” he said.

“I’m disappointed in the result – we could’ve possibly got a draw for the pressure that we put on in the second half.

“It was a great game of football for both teams and I’m so proud of our players.”
