David Worrall on target as Port Vale end MK Dons’ FA Cup challenge

Russell Martin’s first game in management ended in defeat as MK Dons suffered a 1-0 defeat to Port Vale in the first round of the FA Cup.
David Worrall’s first-half header was all John Askey’s men needed to see Vale progress, as MK suffered a sixth defeat in seven winless games.
The Dons went close inside 15 minutes when Alex Gilbey was first to fire the ball goalwards from the edge of the Vale box, forcing goalkeeper Scott Brown into action.
But the visitors took the lead minutes later when James Gibbons’ cross from the right found Worrall unmarked at the Dons back post, who headed home his second goal in three games.
Worrall aimed to turn provider just before the break when he picked out Richie Bennett inside the Dons six-yard box, but the frontman could not keep his header down.
The home side should have levelled through Ben Reeves after 65 minutes when he had time and space inside the Vale box to line up a shot, only to fire well over.
Martin’s side upped the pressure late on and launched balls into the box, but they could not find a way past a determined Port Vale defence as Askey men progressed to the second round.
