John Askey felt Port Vale deserved their win over Crewe

Port Vale boss John Askey believes success on the road was long overdue for his side as they maintained their impressive record at rivals Crewe.

On-loan midfielder Jake Taylor’s second-half winner secured only the Valiants’ second away win in League Two this term.

Askey was not surprised that Vale’s stubborn defending thwarted Alexandra’s efforts to hit back and the battling display left his side two points off a top-seven place.

Crewe, who have not beaten their local rivals in their last four meetings at Gresty Road, dropped to fourth.

Askey said: “We have been playing well away from home and we were unfortunate not to get three points before we beat Bradford the other week.

“With the exception of the game at Grimsby we have been good, but sometimes it takes a bit of time to get results and if we were going to choose a game to win away from home then this is the one you would choose.

“We probably created the better chances and it is the second game we have won at a side at the top. No-one has taken us apart and if we can continue to work hard we’ll get results.”

Midfielder Taylor netted his fourth goal since arriving on loan from Nottingham Forest and Askey hopes to extend his stay.

“Jake covered a lot of ground and you need that from your midfielders if you are going to win games. Hopefully, we can keep him a lot longer,” he said.

Crewe boss Dave Artell lamented the way his players let a powerful start to the second half fade with their only response being two disappointing efforts from leading scorer Chris Porter.

Artell said: “We were on top for 15 minutes at the start of the second half and then they get a corner and suddenly the ball is in the back of our net.

“I don’t think there was too much to choose between either team in the first half. Their goal was against the run of play and after it some of the players wilted.

“I was angry about the way we played in that last half an hour. We went away from doing what we should have been doing although you have to give Port Vale credit as they stopped us playing at times.

“But we can be much better than what we showed today.”
