Gillingham boss Evans praises goalkeeper Bonham

Steve Evans praised goalkeeper Jack Bonham as Gillingham chalked up their first away win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Accrington.

Regan Charles-Cook scored the only goal of the game in the 59th minute, Tom O’Connor’s pass finding the midfielder and he curled the ball home from the edge of the area.

Stanley, however, were ruing missed chances as Colby Bishop hit the woodwork twice, Offrande Zanzala skimmed the post with a shot and also had a goal ruled out for off-side.

The Reds also found Bonham in inspired form as he pulled off a number of spectacular saves to preserve the win.

“Jack has made a number of top class saves, he has done well and deserved his clean sheet,” said Gillingham boss Evans.

“The game was always in the balance. In the first half, they were better than us, some of my players didn’t turn up, but we had a word at half-time and changed things, the shape of the team, and we got the goal through some great play.

“It was end-to-end after that and they could have scored, Jack’s made a few saves but this is a good win for us, I would say this is one of the toughest places to come.

“Our back four are only young but they are starting to find their form, they are putting their bodies on the line and it’s making a difference.

“We have drawn too many away from home, even though some of performances have deserved more, so it’s good to get that win.”

Stanley manager John Coleman was disappointed at his side’s inability to find the back of the net and they are looking over their shoulders at the relegation spots.

“Our performance was good enough to win the game, we had enough chances to win the game but we haven’t taken them and we only have ourselves to blame.

“It’s poor defending for their goal and that proved to be the difference. Their keeper has made four top class saves and then we have also had four really good chances besides them but we have hit the post or missed.

“Nobody is hurting as much as Colby but he should have walked away with the match-ball, instead he has walked away on the losing side.

“The harsh reality is we couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net.

“The fact their keeper is their man of the match shows we are doing something right but results are the currency not performances.

“We have got to be better, we will have to have double sessions in finishing as that has dramatically let us down.”
