MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly set to step up their pursuit of James Maddison as they target four new signings.

The Leicester City man, 22, has been in fine form under Brendan Rodgers this season, scoring three and grabbing two assists.

United are understood to be keen on making a move next year for the former Coventry and Norwich midfielder.

And according to the Manchester Evening News, the Old Trafford club are optimistic they can land him.

The report suggests Manchester United see 23 as the ideal age for player recruitment - and Maddison turns 23 next month.

And his close friendship with former team-mate Harry Maguire, who moved from the King Power to Old Trafford this summer.

United paid a world-record £85million for the England centre-back.

Leicester have no reason to accept any less than that should they agree to sell their No10.

He is under contract until the summer of 2023 and the club no longer have release clauses in their players' contracts after being forced into selling N'Golo Kante to Chelsea for £30m in 2016.

Earlier this week, The Athletic reported that United expect to sign Maddison within the next year with the club crying out for a creative midfielder.

The good relationship between Red Devils' executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and Leicester's chief executive Susan Whelan could help the pursuit.

However, it is thought Liverpool, Spurs and Manchester City are all also interested in the Englishman, who is yet to make his senior debut.

The Red Devils want to make four new signings next year to help get them out of their current slump.

Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James arrived in the latest transfer window and have all proven to be successes so far.

But it is clear that they need more and could therefore target the likes of Jadon Sancho, Moussa Dembele, Christian Eriksen and Mario Mandzukic.
