Kenny Jackett understands fans’ frustrations at under-performing Portsmouth

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett admitted he is feeling the heat from the fans after his side was beaten 1-0 by AFC Wimbledon.

Jackett’s side enjoyed 62 per cent of the possession at Kingsmeadow and hit the crossbar through defender Christian Burgess but could not find a way through.

And Dons defender Terrell Thomas made a frustrating afternoon even worse for the visitors when he fired home the winning header in stoppage time to send Pompey back to the south coast empty-handed.

“The crowd are frustrated with me and I can hear that,” said Jackett.

“There is nobody that feels that more than the manager because it is a very privileged position being a football manager and Portsmouth is a fantastic club.

“It was very disappointing because it was a game that we had the lions’ share of.

“We could not quite make it happen in their box and in the final third and got downed by a sucker-punch at the end.

“I am experienced enough to know Tuesday night is the key and to build on a lot of good things we have and to turn it around.

“We need to go on a run to get us out of the position in the table that after last year we don’t want to be in.

“We need to find the edge and keep encouraging the players at the right time to preserve.

“We had enough of the game today to take the points but we did not do that and as a manager I can see the supporters’ frustration.”

Meanwhile, Wimbledon caretaker-manager Glyn Hodges oversaw his side extend their winning streak to four games and climb out of the relegation zone into 20th place.

And despite leaving it late, Hodges was pleased with what he saw from his players in front of goal.

“We left it late but this is another great victory for us,” Hodges said.

“The players have been magnificent with the attitude that they’ve shown in the last few matches and the fans have seen in the performances we are in a good place.

“The big difference between now and earlier in the season is we are being more clinical in front of goal and that was the case again today.

“It would have been easy, once we got into stoppage time, to settle for a draw against a good Portsmouth side but the lads showed great desire to go and press for the winner.

“To win four games in a row is not easy in any league but we want to keep that run going as long as possible now.

“I was pleased to pick up a clean sheet too and we are certainly in a rich vein of form and long may that continue.”
