JAMES MILNER fled to Spain to escape the heartache of Liverpool's 2018 Champions League final defeat - but had the rotten luck of bumping into matchwinner Gareth Bale.

Bale scored twice, including an out-of-this-world bicycle kick, to give Real Madrid a 3-1 win over the Reds.

Bale was probably the last person Milner wanted to see a week after the defeat, but the former England star bumped into the Welshman during a round of golf on holiday in Spain.

Speaking on BT Sport's What I Wore series, the 33-year-old described the scene after he was shown a replica of Bale's final winning shirt.

Milner was asked whether he hated the Welsh wizard before he made the revelation and said: "I don't hate him but there's some bad memories in there obviously.

"The worst part about it was I went away to Spain just after to get away from it and whose buggy was parked in front of mine on the first tee?

"So I couldn't even get away from him a week later."

Despite the encounter Milner could likely have done without, he still took time to praise the ex-Tottenham man for the goal that will go down in football history.

The Englishman added: "The goal was incredible.

"I think how good the goal is in any game is top but to change a game in the Champions League final like he did...

"Sometimes you've just go: 'respect.'"
