Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will need a long time to turn Manchester United around, according to Mark Robins.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may need up to 10 transfer windows to turn the club’s fortunes around, claims Mark Robins.

United have endured their worst start to a season for 30 years as they have slumped down to 12th place with just nine points in eight matches and haven’t won a Premier League match for almost a month.

A section of the fans have lost faith in Solskjaer and have demanded his removal from the dugout but Robins insists the Red Devils should be patient and understand that there can’t be any easy or quick solutions.

The Coventry boss claimed the Old Trafford outfit may require up to 10 transfer windows, or five years, to finally return to the top.

The former striker pointed at Sir Alex Ferguson’s poor start to life at United in 1986 as an example.

Ferguson’s position became untenable after three years without a trophy under his management and rumours suggested that he would be sacked if he didn’t beat Nottingham Forest in the third round of the FA Cup.

However, Robins scored a header to win the game and Sir Alex went on to win the FA Cup that season and go on to become arguably the club’s greatest ever manager.

The 49-year-old, who went down in history for scoring “the goal that saved Fergie”, insists Solskjaer should get more time to prove himself and management should back him the same way they did with Ferguson.

Robins told talkSPORT: “I’d love to see Ole get the time to be able to build, because he is not doing it in one window; he’s going to need six, seven, eight, nine… ten windows.

“You don’t get that time generally.

“Ultimately what he is doing is trying to implement the processes Sir Alex had in place prior to his retirement.

“I think that is a huge ask.

“Remember Sir Alex went years prior to winning his first trophy and that will be very, very difficult to replicate because of the modern day pressures.

“Having said that, if things are moving in the right direction then he will get some time.

“I also think Ole is a character that’s not putting himself front and centre; he’s putting his club front and centre.

“So he will be part of a process moving forward to make United successful again, and I don’t think he makes any qualms about that.

“I think that is something to be applauded and respected.”
