Kenny Jackett feels Portsmouth’s luck is changing

Under-fire Kenny Jackett felt luck had finally come the way of his Portsmouth side as they grabbed a 2-1 win at Doncaster.

Substitute Ellis Harrison looped in an added-time header to give struggling Pompey their first away win of the season.

It was scarcely deserved with Doncaster having dominated attacking play but failing to make the pressure count.

Gareth Evans gave Portsmouth the lead against the run of play on the hour before Reece James levelled the score with eight minutes to play before Harrison struck.

‘We haven’t had much luck so far this season, but similarly defending was more like ourselves and we have to work towards that,” Jackett said.

‘I thought we defended more like ourselves, we defended well, we had to, but the second period at least we had a threat going forward, scored two goals and could have got more.

‘In terms of the first half, we didn’t have enough of a threat, in the second period, although they still had a lot of the ball, we defended fantastically well and I feel our defending, our co-ordination, our distances, our blocks and defending in our box was excellent and more like ourselves defensively.

‘A clean sheet last week and one goal against this week.”

Doncaster boss Darren Moore refused to use the lack of a recognised striker in his side as an excuse for failing to make their dominance count.

Rovers showed much the greater threat in the clash with lacklustre Portsmouth but were twice chasing the game.

Injuries to Niall Ennis and Kazaiah Sterling left Moore without a senior striker to call upon but he did not feel that was the reason Rovers lost the game.

“It’s not a cop out for us because even without the so-called recognised striker we have created those chances,” Moore said.

“I would say that if we didn’t create the chances then I’d be very worried.

“The mere fact that we do create the chances game after game is a positive. We do have to create chances ourselves because teams come with different ideas of how to stop us.

“It was a game I thought we dominated for long spells, created chances but just didn’t have that final touch.

“As a manager I am proud of the team because of the performance we showed. We always go by the performance and it was a good one.

“I’m gutted for them because they’ve not come out of the game with what they should have got out of it.

“We should have taken the three points but we’ve not taken it and we just look at the positives.”
