McDaid double for Dundee downs Abroath

Declan McDaid struck twice as Dundee ensured Arbroath’s first league game against their neighbours in over 40 years ended in a 2-0 defeat.
McDaid opened the scoring in the 38th minute with his first goal for the club, the summer signing from Ayr firing in off the post from 25 yards out.
The 23-year-old then doubled the lead, and his Dundee account, just before the hour with a rising shot from near the edge of the box.
Arbroath, playing Dundee for only the second time in any competition since 1980, came agonisingly close to pulling a goal back moments later but Ben Stirling saw his long-range effort hit the post.
Last season’s League One champions continued to search for a foothold back into the game but Dundee held firm for a victory that sees them close the gap on leaders Dundee United to six points.
