Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists his stars played well in their drab 0-0 draw at AZ Alkmaar.

The Red Devils failed to register a shot on target against the Dutch side.

United are now without a win in their last ten away games in all competitions.

However, despite United’s below-par performance, Solskjaer insists his side played well in difficult conditions on AZ Alkmaar’s artificial pitch.

Solskjaer said: “Very happy with the boys, we come away with a good performance.

"Should have been three points, a nailed on penalty. You cant even discuss it.

"Good performance against a good opponent on a very bad surface.

"If you get your draws away from home and win your home games you’ll be fine.

"We go to Belgrade wanting a win and that sets up up nicely.”

United could have had a penalty in the second half after Marcus Rashford was brought down in the area.

Stijn Wuytens' challenge was late and caught the England international.

However, the referee waved away United’s appeals, leaving Solskjaer in disbelief.

When asked about their penalty appeal, the Norwegian said United were denied a blatant spot kick: “I just couldn’t believe what I saw.

"Same as Arsenal, the handball that should have been 2-0.

"It’s frustrating now these little things because the boys deserve more.”

United were also handed an injury blow in the second half with substitute Jesse Lingard forced off.

The England ace was seen clutching his hamstring as he walked down the tunnel.

And Solskjaer expects the playmaker to miss their trip to Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.

"I think he felt his hamstring, I don’t think he’s too bad. Probably not Newcastle but ready for Liverpool,” he added.

United are back in action on Sunday evening against Newcastle in the Premier League.

A win could send the Red Devils up to fifth.
