Port Vale boss Askey frustrated after draw

John Askey cut a disconsolate figure after watching his Port Vale team come so close to picking up their first away league win of the season before having to settle for a 3-3 draw at Brisbane Road.

Orient, who have not won at home since the opening day of the season went ahead in the fourth minute through Josh Wright but found themselves trailing by the interval to goals from Scott Burgess and Leon Legge.

Conor Wilkinson then drilled the home side back in front just before the hour  but Vale looked to have snatched the points when Jake Taylor scored a beauty from 25 yards.

But in added time, Wright scored his second header of the game to equalise.

“It was frustrating and disappointing for the players and the supporters, to be 3-2 up with minutes to go” said Valiants boss Askey.

“All the goals we conceded today were avoidable but the disappointing part is when we came out second-half and stopped playing because we got embroiled in a bit of a fight and a scrap.

“We needed to get a foot on the ball and pass it better than we did.  I thought we did well to weather the storm and then we got that third goal but it wasn’t to be.

“When you score three goals away from home, you expect to win,” Askey continued.

“In the second-half, we allowed them to get on top of us a little bit.

“So it was disappointing because I thought it was a game I thought we should have won. They threw men forward and were creating chances but I still thought we had chances to win it but weren’t able to capitalise on it.

Ross Embleton, who stepped down from his role as Leyton Orient interim head coach last Monday but remains in charge until a new head coach is appointed, said: “The message before the game today was to use this to build and impress a potential new manager sitting in the stands so they have a good impression of us and also give that individual some points they can use to take the club forward.

“We were disappointed with the goals we conceded. We started so brightly but I think we went into a negative mindset and there looks to be some uncertainty in some individuals.

“We came out the second half and gave it a real good go and I have to say the substitutes are all there to make an impact and I think they all did that today.

“They all gave us a platform to build and find a way back into the game.

“It was a great finish to give them the lead but we showed great fight back to find a way back into the game. “
