Macclesfield lacked nous says boss McMahon

Macclesfield boss Daryl McMahon reckons a lack of nous cost his side as they were beaten 1-0 by Grimsby at Blundell Park.

Ethan Robson, on loan from Sunderland, scored the only goal of the game as the sides met for the third time already this season.

That was owing to an abandoned Carabao Cup tie which was won by Grimsby at the second attempt, courtesy of a penalty shoot-out.

On this occasion in Sky Bet League Two, it was a terrific solo goal from Robson that proved decisive.

McMahon said: “We made poor decisions, whether that was shooting too early or dragging a shot wide when we had more space to move into.

“It’s frustrating because we have done it a lot this season.

“Are they a better team than us? I don’t think so to be honest. But they have got players with more nous and that have been around the block a bit more.

“They take their time in the final third and we don’t at the moment.

“We wanted to stay focused because we knew that the wind was against us. We knew they would try to pen us in with their speed down the outside.

“We had a great chance in the second half to go 1-1. It’s got to be a goal, to be honest. It’s as simple as that.”

Grimsby boss Michael Jolley said: “It wasn’t the greatest of games. I think there were two factors involved in that.

“Number one, the wind was probably worse than it appeared to some people, and it had a big impact on the game in both halves.

“It was also two teams who know each other extremely well, so to some extent cancelled each other out. The combination of those two factors meant it wasn’t a great game.

“In those circumstances, what’s important is you do the basics well, you defend your goal and you take your chances when they come along.

“In the second half, we had more width in our game, more switches and more crosses. I thought we caused them more problems in the second half.”
