Michael still in like Flynn at Newport despite Lincoln approach

Michael Flynn insists he will be staying at Newport despite having been interviewed for the vacant Lincoln manager’s job at the weekend.

Following a 1-1 draw at Macclesfield, which saw Emmanuel Osadebe cancel out Padraig Amond’s opener, Flynn said he would not be succeeding Danny Cowley at Sincil Bank.

“There was an approach and I made a decision; I’ve got a job still to do here,” said Flynn.

Returning his focus to Tuesday’s match, Flynn blamed referee Graham Salisbury for costing his side a precious away win.

He was angry Osadebe’s equaliser was not ruled out for offside as County were thwarted on their travels.

“An offside goal has stopped us from winning it,” said Flynn.

“It’s a bad decision but it’s a solid point away from home and the players put one hell of a shift in. We’d have lost that game last season.

“It was a good end-to-end game. I thought Macclesfield looked dangerous on the counter, but we ended up like that in the second half. It was a bit too open for me away from home.”

Assistant manager Wayne Hatswell was so incensed with the decision that his protests with the officials saw him sent off at half-time.

He watched the second half from the stands, but Flynn played down the incident.

Flynn joked: “I told him to go up (to the stand). He was alright, I wanted him to watch the game from there.

“He wasn’t shown any red card, but he was asked to leave the technical area. I don’t think anything’s going to go (in the referee’s) report.

“I think it was more a case of diffusing it because anything got any worse.”

Flynn added: “It was a hard-fought point. We battled really well but Macc were dangerous and Kingy (keeper Tom King) has made a couple of decent saves.

“But other that they’ve only had shots from long range.”

Macclesfield boss Daryl McMahon was delighted with his side’s battling display and said: “I’m very proud of the performance, I thought we were terrific.

“Apart from that first minute when we conceded I thought we were outstanding for the rest of the game.

“That’s a result we can really build on for the rest of the season.

“You don’t expect a start like that, but I thought we stood up as a team and got the reaction we wanted. Our performance was superb.

“It was a poor goal to concede so we know we need to be sharper, but we responded well after that.”

And match-leveller Osadebe was singled out for special praise from his manager after scoring his first goal for over a month.

“I thought ‘Paddy’ was really good,” said McMahon. “He’s a player with huge potential. He’s got to keep working hard to go to a level he really can reach. He’s got all the tools to be a top player.”

He added: “We’ve been really good on set-pieces tonight, we had great intent and that’s very pleasing.

“I thought we got stronger as the game went on. We looked a real threat on the counter-attack.

“I thought we had enough chances to win it.”
