Michael Jolley pleased with Grimsby’s fighting spirit

Grimsby boss Michael Jolley praised his team’s never-say-die spirit after they salvaged a late 2-2 draw at Oldham.

The home side were in control when Christopher Missilou volleyed in after 19 minutes and Filipe Morais doubled the lead on the hour mark with a bullet header from Desire Segbe Azankpo’s fine cross.

Grimsby had created few clear chances, but they snatched a lifeline in the 81st minute as impressive substitute Jordan Cook slotted home at the far post.

The fightback continued with the match entering injury time, with defender Ludvig Ohman reaching a set-piece to head in from close range.

Jolley said: “I have to praise the character and resilience in coming from behind to take a point.

“We have mixed feelings because we weren’t happy with certain aspects of the game. We need to give ourselves more opportunities to win, but the great thing is that we don’t know when we are beaten.

“It isn’t the first time this has happened, so fair play to them. The supporters gave us energy and the first goal we scored gave us more belief.

“The last few minutes were a bit end to end, but you have to take a point given the situation we found ourselves in. We don’t want to be in that position too often, but we got a point when most people would have written us off.

“The subs who came on all affected the game, so it’s good to have that depth in our squad. The players really kept going to the end.”

Oldham head coach Laurent Banide has managed just one victory in his first eight League Two matches.

Banide said: “We played well and it was better, but the problem is that we did not close the game. When you are winning and it’s the last few minutes, you must think more about how you play.

“It’s difficult and frustrating that we did not win. We have to learn fast because the results are the thing that matter.

“Yes, at 2-0 we could have scored more goals and we had one or two opportunities to score again. But after that, when you are in the last four or five minutes, you have to concentrate on closing the game.

“We played with too much open space and gave them opportunities. It is a bad result after the way we played.

“As a team you cannot keep playing and moving everywhere on the pitch. Of course it’s good to play well – and we did for a lot of the time – but we need points and the changing room is not happy.”
