Joel Matip's Liverpool contract extended
Writing in The Athletic, reporter James Pearce has confirmed that Liverpool have triggered Joel Matip's contract extension clause.
Matip joined Liverpool on a free transfer from Schalke back in 2016.
The Cameroonian centre-half originally agreed a four-year deal to remain at Anfield.
However, Matip will remain on Merseyside past the end of the season, as readers are told:
It has emerged that Liverpool have triggered an option in the original agreement to extend it by an extra 12 months.
s a result the services of the former Cameroon international, who has started the season in fine form, have been retained until the summer of 2021.
Bad news for Joe Gomez?
How will Joe Gomez react to the news that Matip's contract at Liverpool has been extended?
Prior to the start of the season, it was unclear whether Jurgen Klopp would start Matip or Gomez next to Virgil van Dijk.
Gomez started the Community Shield as well as the Premier League opener against Norwich City.
However, since the Norwich game, Matip has started every game for Liverpool in the Premier League.
James Milner's Liverpool future
Confirmation of Matip's contract extension appeared in a James Pearce article focusing on James Milner.
This season, Milner started against Southampton, while he was a sub against Arsenal.
Now 33, Milner's contract at Anfield expires at the end of the campaign.
Will Milner agree a new contract with the Reds? Liverpool fans are told:
The Athletic understands that… preliminary talks have taken place with Liverpool about a potential extension (to Milner's contract) and more dialogue is set to follow.
