Christian Eriksen is preparing to run down his Tottenham contract but Real Madrid will not snap him up, in a boost to Manchester United.

Real Madrid will reportedly not sign Christian Eriksen on a free transfer once his Tottenham contract expires, serving a boost to Manchester United.

Eriksen is in the last year of his Spurs deal but has snubbed improved contract offers from the club.

He said in June he wants a new challenge after six years with Tottenham, during which Erisken has become one of the most coveted playmakers in world football.

He has scored 67 goals and laid on 86 assists in 281 appearances for Spurs but his trophy mantle remains empty - and a move to Real Madrid seemed a sensical switch.

But, according to The Mirror, Los Blancos will not try to sign Eriksen if he sees out his contract in north London.

That is because the Spanish giants rarely sign free agents, with their preference on Galactico incomings.

The report also states Eriksen was not high on Real’s wishlist this summer, when Tottenham would have charged a hefty fee.

United tried to sign playmaker Paulo Dybala this summer but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer called the deal off as he felt the Argentine did not buy into his project.

Solskjaer did not sign a creative midfielder in the end leaving the door open to a signing in that mould.

United have historically tried to sign the cream of the crop in the Premier League and welcoming Eriksen for free next summer would likely be the favoured approach over a drawn out negotiation process with the hard-nosed Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

Eriksen can sign a pre-contract agreement with another European club in January, as former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey did with Juventus earlier this year.

After the European summer transfer window closed this week, Eriksen said he wished he could control his future “like you can do in the [computer game] Football Manager”.

“I don’t think it was wrong [to say that it was time for a new challenge],” the Dane said. “But this is football and you never know what happens in football. A lot of things play a part.”

In June, Eriksen said of a potential move to Real: “Real Madrid is a step up but then it would take Real Madrid picking up the phone and making contact with Tottenham and say that they want Christian.

“And that they haven’t done as far as I know. It all depends on [Tottenham chairman] Daniel Levy and there has to be another club too. Or I will sit down myself at the table and negotiate a new contract.

“You can’t set a date yourself. There aren’t many boxes that Tottenham don’t tick so if I have to move away, it would have to be a step up.”
