Confirmed: Arsenal's Henrikh Mkhitaryan joins Roma on loan

Arsenal have this evening confirmed that Henrikh Mkhitaryan has departed the club to join Serie A outfit AS Roma for the 2019/20 campaign.

Gunners stint

Armenian attacking midfielder/winger Mkhitaryan had been on Arsenal's books since January of last year.

The former Borussia Dortmund man made the move to the Emirates from Manchester United in a swap deal (of sorts) that saw Alexis Sanchez move in the opposite direction.

Mkhitaryan's time in Arsenal's colours, though, has since proven somewhat underwhelming.

The 31-year-old showcased glimpses of his unquestionable talent in patches over the course of his 18 months in the English capital, racking up a respectable 6 goals and 4 assists in the Premier League last season.

As he has done throughout his time in England, though, Mkhitaryan too often failed to perform when Arsenal needed him most, in high-profile meetings with the rest of the top-6.

And his showings have since continued to deteriorate over the early weeks of the new campaign.

Roma switch

As such, recent rumours that Unai Emery and co. had come to the decision that the experienced midfielder was surplus to requirements at the club had come as little surprise.

And, on the back of mounting speculation over the last 24 hours, Mkhitaryan's Emirates departure has this evening been made official.

In an announcement across the respective clubs' social media platforms, both Arsenal and Roma have confirmed that 'Mkhi' has joined the latter on loan for the remainder of the 2019/20 season:

Roma have forked over €3 million for Mkhitaryan's temporary signature. There is no mention from either club regarding whether the Giallorossi have secured an option to make his arrival permanent.
