Ainsworth felt a point was fair after Wycombe were held at AFC Wimbledon again

Gareth Ainsworth was frustrated his Wycombe side were unable to end their away day hoodoo at AFC Wimbledon but felt a point was a fair result after their 0-0 draw.

Wycombe have not won at AFC Wimbledon since 2008 and Ainsworth hoped his unbeaten side could end that run this time.

Former Dons striker Adebayo Akinfenwa did have the ball in the back of the net – but his joy was cut short by the assistant referee’s flag.

Ainsworth said: “I’ve broken a lot of records during my time here but unfortunately the away one at Wimbledon still stands.

“Hopefully we can come back one day and put that one to bed.

“I think a point was a fair result at the end of the day.

“We’ve had some great chances and failed to take them which is disappointing.

“Football is a strange game. Last week we scored four goals and this week we’ve had chances and failed to score.

“I’d have taken a point coming into the game. I wanted all three and obviously it would have been horrible to come away with nothing after that.”

It was a first half devoid of any quality, with Wycombe’s Scott Kashket’s shot straight at Nathan Trott the best chance.

After the break Joe Pigott blasted over with the goal gaping.

Akinfenwa seemingly stole the spoils late on but was denied by the assistant’s flag. Nick Freeman forced a good low save from Trott with Akinfenwa poking home from an offside position.

And Freeman failed to hit the target with two good chances late on.

Dons boss Wally Downes said: “I think we definitely deserved a point, but I know I’m being biased.

“We knew the way they were going to play. They were going to lump it up to the big man.

“But we’re up for the battle, we’re always up for the battle.

“Sometimes a bit of quality lets us down and our game management lets us down.

“We’ve got a new team and the results will come.

“If you go through their results, they score late on in games. I’m delighted that we saw out the game.

“I felt that we matched them today.

“I think we should have a couple more points and probably two wins which haven’t manifested themselves.

“The teams that we’ve played in those first six games make up a few places in the top six.

“I’m happy with the way we’ve acquitted ourselves so far.

“I keep telling the players if they keep playing the way they’re playing and believe in themselves then results will come.”
