Ferguson wary of late Sunderland bid for Maddison

Darren Ferguson watched Marcus Maddison help Peterborough earn a convincing 3-0 win against nine-man Sunderland, then quipped he was nervous the visitors might try to sign him.

Black Cats fan Maddison scored twice either side of Josh Knight’s first goal for the club before the visitors had Luke O’Nien and Charlie Wyke sent off.

The forward, who has a release clause in his contract, was offered to Sunderland earlier in the transfer window and, when asked if he was confident he would be at the club after the transfer deadline shuts on Monday, Ferguson smiled as he said: “No!”

Ferguson added: “There’s only really one club who might buy him – and we’ve just played them. If they meet the clause he can go.

“There’s probably only Sunderland who can sign him, but I’ve not seen any signs of it happening and nobody has mentioned it to me.

“We’ve tried (to sign a midfielder) and the one we wanted has decided to stay at his club and fight for his place. I don’t know if we’re going to bring in anyone now. We’ve got enough numbers we feel.”

Ferguson continued: “I thought we started the game well. In a game like this the first goal is very important and Marcus scored a great free-kick.

“He’s always been a very talented boy. He’s always had assists and now he’s added goals. That’s three goals now he’s got. The boy’s got quality, he’s enjoying his football and he was very good today.

Maddison livened up a drab match with a fizzing free-kick after 36 minutes.

Knight then drilled in a low finish past Jon McLaughlin on 52 minutes to cap a sweeping counter-attack, before Maddison found the bottom-left corner after George Boyd’s deflected left-wing cross fell to him.

Sunderland, who were on a five-match winning run in all competitions,  saw O’Nien sent off for an altercation with Posh’s Ivan Toney on 71 minutes before Wyke’s late challenge on Dan Butler six minutes later earned him a second yellow.

Sunderland manager Jack Ross said: “It’s a sore one for us but there are days where you have to take your medicine. We’re disappointed but it’s a long season and we have opportunities ahead.

“It’s a strange one standing here, because when you are on the end of that scoreline people will have a perception of how the game went.

“We played well first half. Against a good team I thought we were good. We were solid defensively and looked a threat going forward.

“The free-kick aside we would have been happy at half-time, but we still believed we could win the game and we started in that manner.

“Our discipline this season has been good, but this has had an impact on how the game panned out and has an impact on future games.

“I don’t think Luke’s is a red card. I’ve watched it again. I think Charlie’s is two cautions.”
