No complaints from managers after Carabao Cup tie abandoned

There were no complaints from either manager after the Carabao Cup tie between Grimsby Town and Macclesfield had to be abandoned.

With the scores level heading into half-time, referee Darren Drysdale was left with no other option but to call the game off following an intense downpour at Blundell Park.

In the 45 minutes that were played, Macclesfield captain Jak McCourt struck the post from a curling free-kick, while youth graduate Max Wright dragged wide at the other end.

A new date for the tie has yet to be confirmed, with both sides remaining in the hat ahead of the third round draw.

Town boss Michael Jolley said: “I think in the end it was the right decision.

“We were hopeful that the rain might stop and it might improve, but every time the referee came out to the pitch it got worse didn’t it. No complaints.

“The draw is made tonight so it will need to be done in time for the third round, but we have got a game next week anyway. It remains to be seen when it will be.”

Macclesfield boss Daryl McMahon added: “No complaints at all. It was raining really heavily and there was a lot of surface water on the pitch.

“It would have been dangerous for the players had we returned. And looking at the weather, we would have only got 15 or 20 minutes in anyway.

“It was very unreal. I’ve never seen anything like it and I’m from Dublin.

“I was pleased with our performance, though, having made seven changes. I was enjoying the game, but no complaints.”

It took a short while for the tie to settle, with Macclesfield having the first attempt at goal when Connor Kirby hit a snap-shot wide of the target.

At the other end, winger Wright took aim shortly before McCourt hit the post from a free-kick.

Further opportunities were few and far between for the remainder of the half, with the decision ultimately made by referee Drysdale at half-time.
