We never give up – Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth after seven-goal thriller

Gareth Ainsworth has warned Wycombe fans not to miss out after his side produced more late drama to see off Southend 4-3.

The Chairboys, who have scored late in home wins over MK Dons and Bolton already this season, fell 3-1 behind and still trailed by one with two minutes of normal time left.

But Anthony Stewart equalised before Scott Kashket struck a stoppage-time winner as the hosts maintained their unbeaten League One record..

“It’s fantastic that it (late goals) is becoming a regular occurrence for us,” he said.

“What we’re showing is we don’t ever give up. I know it’s a cliche but we don’t.

“These boys will graft until the very end. The fitness and the heart from these boys I’m really pleased with.

“What a way to win it was. Two games running at home it’s been absolute elation.

“I’m expecting 10,000 next home game against Lincoln because who knows what can happen here?”

Ainsworth has highlighted some areas to improve on but felt the outcome was the right one.

He added: “If I’m honest I thought we deserved to win. I don’t know what everyone else thinks.

“But we’ve conceded three sloppy goals. Two have come from outside the box, which we shouldn’t do.

“We looked a bit tired from Tuesday night, getting back at 4am from Fleetwood.

“Our forward play was incredible. Some of the goals are fantastic goals.”

Southend were seemingly on course to break their duck after Brandon Goodship’s opener was followed by Stephen Humphrys’ fine double.

Boss Kevin Bond said: “As you can imagine it feels like a knife in the heart.

“It’s bitterly disappointing, but we’ve only got ourselves to blame. We got a two-goal lead then another two-goal lead with 35 minutes left to play and we can’t defend it.

“It’s hugely disappointing. We weren’t open, but rarely have we been in front and had a lead to defend.

“We gave ourselves a lead and we couldn’t do it. Words fail me. When it’s so important to us at this stage.

“I’ve got to be honest I’d expect us to see it out after putting ourselves in that position.

“We’d done the job which we came here to do. We knew we’d be put under pressure and we knew we’d have to deal with that and ultimately we didn’t.

“A goal in front in 89 minutes and we go on to lose the game. I don’t know what to say about that. In those moments you need to show resolve and we didn’t.”
