Cheltenham boss Michael Duff backs Swindon for promotion after draw

Cheltenham boss Michael Duff backed Swindon to win promotion this season following Saturday’s 2-2 Sky Bet League Two draw at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium.
Swindon went ahead twice in the first half through Eoin Doyle’s brace but each time they were pegged back by goals from Chris Hussey and Luke Varney.
Michael Doughty was dismissed in the second half and Cheltenham finished the stronger against the 10 men, but neither side could find a winner.
“I think Swindon are one of the best teams in the league so to go 1-0 and 2-1 down showed the character that we have and I thought we shaded the second half,” Duff, who was released by Swindon as a youngster, said.
“A draw was probably the fair result and am not sure I’d want too many more of those sorts of games as a manager – although I expect it was a great advert for League Two.
“It was great for the supporters and a good game to watch, open with two teams trying to play good football.
“I thought we were going to nick it at the end as well, which would have been a cherry on the top.
“But I told them after the game, they have taken a team who will get promoted this season in my opinion, all the way.”
Swindon boss Richie Wellens was forced to watch the game from the stand as part of his two-game touchline ban, but he was upbeat about his team’s display, despite them failing to end their winless record at Cheltenham.
“We look a good team,” Wellens said. “It was a really good performance in the first half and so I was disappointed to come in at 2-2.
“I wish we’d seen it out at 2-1 for a little longer because then we could’ve picked them off.
“I thought that tactically we were spot on and the players executed it perfectly.
“We probably should’ve had another two points, but I didn’t get fined today and so I’m happy.
“We keep the curse going of not winning here and I apologise to the fans for that, but I think they’ll go home happy with the performance.
“Cheltenham are a good team and they’ll win lots of games here. People know we’ve got a good team, but if we can supplement them with three or four others, then we’ll be a force.”
