Mixed emotions for Crawley boss Cioffi after Scunthorpe draw

Gabriele Cioffi was left with mixed emotions after his Crawley side’s 2-2 draw at Scunthorpe.
He was pleased to see the Red Devils hit back for a point after the hosts came from behind to take a 2-1 lead 10 minutes into the second half.
But at the same time the Italian was disappointed Crawley could not go on to take all three points, with Bez Lubala seeing a late penalty saved by Scunthorpe goalkeeper Rory Watson.
“I think you could say it was both one point gained and two dropped,” Cioffi said. “Overall I’m happy because we put in a good performance.
“We are a work in progress, but we are doing something important. The mentality we are trying to give the players is standard, consistency and competition.
“We are showing what we can do with performance after performance and we have to be happy with what we are doing.
“I was pleased for the supporters that were here that we got the equaliser.
“After the first 25 minutes we switched off completely – as we saw with the second goal – but we didn’t give up.
“We built on the performance and even when we missed the penalty we kept going and the keeper had to make another great save.”
Crawley went in front through Lubala’s third goal in as many matches in the 20th minute, only for Iron defender Rory McArdle to head the hosts level 13 minutes later.
Scunthorpe went in front with the goal of the game 10 minutes into the second half as Matthew Lund rifled the ball into the top corner on the half volley.
But Crawley hit back with 17 minutes to play as Nathan Ferguson headed home a left-wing cross at the near post.
Having been on the back foot up until that point, the visitors finished strongly, but Watson pushed away Lubala’s spot-kick – after the winger had been bundled over in the box – before later pushing a powerful low drive from the same player onto a post.
“It was certainly to-and-fro,” Scunthorpe boss Paul Hurst said, after watching his side pick up their first point of the campaign.
“Crawley had the better of the game at the start and the end, but in between I thought we were the better side.
“They will probably think in the end they should have won the game with the penalty save and hitting the post.
“For me, at 2-1 we had chances to get a third goal which, while it wouldn’t have been game over, it would have certainly made it difficult.
“Overall a point was perhaps a fair result and we’re pleased to get off the mark and end the run of defeats.”
