Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has taken the surprise decision to allow Sergio Aguero and David Silva to take part in a testimonial for Vincent Kompany.
The match on September 11 will pit a Manchester City Legends team against a Premier League All-Star XI.
And Guardiola, who will be in the dugout, wants two of his star names to make cameo appearances at the Etihad.
However, the game comes just three days before Manchester City’s trip to Norwich in the Premier League.
Kompany left Manchester City in the summer in a blaze of glory after eleven successful years at the club.
He won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and four League Cups during his time at the club, making 360 appearances in all competitions.
And Kompany’s wonder goal against Leicester City last season will live long in the memory after it helped Pep Guardiola’s team retain their Premier League trophy.
The 33-year-old then left Manchester to take over as player-manager at former club Anderlecht.
But his career with City will be remembered in the showpiece game, and Silva and Aguero are set to play 15 minutes each.
The good news for worried City fans is that the game will take place between the international break and the return of the Premier League.
And with former Spain star Silva retired from international duty and Aguero having time to recover after friendly games with Argentina, an appearance for Kompany shouldn’t prove to straining.
Guardiola will manage Manchester City Legends while Belgium boss Roberto Martinez will take charge of the Premier League All-stars XI.
Speaking ahead of the event, the City boss expressed his delight at being part of Kompany’s special day.
“To have the opportunity to manage the Manchester City Legends for this game is an honour and a privilege for me,” he said.
“Vincent’s place in the pantheon of City greats is secure and for me to have the chance to be so involved in his testimonial really means a lot.
“It was immediately clear to me when taking over at City just how important Vincent was to this football club.”
