Coventry manager Mark Robins praised the quality of his side’s goals as they eased into the second round of the Carabao Cup with a 4-1 victory against Exeter.
The Sky Blues got off to the best possible start when Jordy Hiwula gave them the lead in the second minutes and after Matt Godden doubled the lead, Hiwula added his second before the half-hour mark.
Exeter scored a consolation through Pierce Sweeney with nine minutes left but Amadou Bakayoko rounded off the scoring for the hosts late on.
“First half was really good,” said Robins. “We started brightly and the finish from Jordy Hiwula was one we’ve been looking for from him for a while, it gave us a confidence boost at the start.
“We really got a foothold when we went 2-0 up and then the third one. The goals were all really well-worked.
“Just a bit disappointed with their goal – it was a poor one to concede but all in all pleased with a good performance.”
Exeter manager Matt Taylor said: “We came out second half and did better than the first half. We didn’t give ourselves a chance tonight.
“Second half was much improved, a much more even game, but when you’re 3-0 down you’ve almost got nothing to lose
“But we didn’t really perform all over the pitch, and our control of the ball was poor and we couldn’t quite handle the speed of Coventry’s players.”
