Middlesbrough manager Jonathan Woodgate is likely to test the depth of his squad in Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup first-round tie against League Two Crewe.
Woodgate has fielded the same starting XI in Boro’s first two Sky Bet Championship matches, but is expected to make changes as he looks to bed in new players.
Experienced defender George Friend is close to a return after missing pre-season through injury, while summer arrivals Marcus Browne and Anfernee Dijksteel have appeared only as substitutes so far and Marc Bola is yet to make his debut.
In addition, the likes of Marcus Tavernier, George Saville and Rudy Gestede will hope for a chance, while Woodgate could also call upon some of the club’s more promising youngsters.
Crewe boss David Artell has signalled his intention to field as strong a side as he possibly can at the Riverside Stadium.
Only defender Nicky Hunt is unavailable with a knee problem, with Artell reporting no fresh concerns following Saturday’s 2-1 league win at Oldham.
Olly Lancashire emerged from that game unscathed following his recovery from a groin strain.
Midfielder Daniel Powell limped off 14 minutes from the end at Boundary Park, but the issue proved to be nothing more than cramp.
