Salford were ‘lacking in the basics’ – Alexander

Salford boss Graham Alexander admitted that his side were lacking in the basics after they tumbled to a 2-0 defeat at Crawley.
The Ammies had a dream start to life in the football league when Emmanuel Dieseruvwe’s double gave a 2-0 opening victory over Stevenage.
But Alexander was quick to admit their first away game “wasn’t good enough” and was “not up the standards in League Two.”
A first half penalty by Bez Lubala and a 54th minute strike from Nathan Ferguson sank Salford and Alexander said: “We were lacking in the basics today.
“It was too easy for Crawley to cut through us. It wasn’t good enough and not at the levels to win in League Two.
“The performance was not up to scratch and we didn’t have the answers.
“We had chances but didn’t take them, we have to start better than today.”
Alexander said his men will relish Tuesday’s Carabao Cup tie at home to Leeds, and added: “We have some options in our squad.
“There is a long way to go. After 10 or 15 games we’ll see how things are. We need to win as many games as possible.”
Crawley have finished in the bottom six three times in the last four seasons and head coach Gabriele Cioffi is aiming to revive their fortunes in his first full season in charge.
The Italian has made 10 Summer signings and was delighted that Lubula and Ferguson marked their home debuts with goals.
He said: “We were the same as we were at Carlisle but today the luck and belief was on our side.
“We are in one direction and that is important. Now there is competition and that is what we want.”
Cioffi, 43, who played extensively in Italy’s Serie B, has set his men an initial target of reaching 50 points.
He added: “We need to be more ruthless and this is the type of performance I want to see.
“We are seeking consistency and hopefully the signings will add desire, pace and skill.”
