John Askey encouraged by Port Vale display in Northampton draw

Port Vale boss John Askey admitted he was encouraged by his side’s display despite being pegged back to a 1-1 draw by Northampton.

David Amoo gave Vale the lead when he headed home from David Worrall’s corner in the 26th minute, while Jamie Gibbons hit the side-netting as the hosts nearly doubled their lead five minutes later.

Ryan Watson levelled two minutes into stoppage time after getting on the end of a Joe Martin corner.

Askey said: “We are frustrated that we didn’t get the win. We had the chances to get a win that we deserved, but it was an encouraging performance.”

Leon Legge headed narrowly wide from Tom Conlon’s free-kick just after the restart, before Luke Joyce cleared Scott Wharton’s header off the line eight minutes after the break.

Scott Brown pulled off the save of the match to keep out Watson’s point-blank header after 65 minutes to ensure the points were shared.

Askey added: “There was plenty of good play and you can see an understanding coming together with the players.

“I thought we should have done better in the first half, we had the chances to be further ahead and then we concede right before half-time.

“It is something we really need to look at and to be more professional. Overall we defended quite well, but we switched off there.

“I am not sure it was a corner which led to their goal, but the ref has given it.

“It is difficult, I try not to get involved as a manager but two or three of their corners did not look like corners and that is where their goal has come from.

“Hopefully we will get the luck next time.”

Northampton boss Keith Curle felt there is plenty more to come from his side.

He said: “It was a well-earned point and a good reaction from the players to come from behind.

“We are disappointed with how we conceded, but the reaction from the players was excellent.

“We need to do that at nil-nil, we found an extra yard and were braver when we fell behind – the players showed more willingness then.

“There is a lot more to come from the players. We are still finding out about each other and there is another yard to come.

“It is frustrating to concede from a set piece again, we have worked hard on what is required from each player in training.

“Players change their mentality when they are out on the pitch and try to do what they think is right, but ultimately it is the wrong decision.

“It is a learning curve for some of our new players in how we do zonal marking and we will keep working hard with the players, it is the way to go.”
