Macclesfield boss Campbell praises performance against Orient

Sol Campbell hailed Macclesfield’s performance after they got their season up and running with a 3-0 win at home to Leyton Orient.
After a desperately unlucky defeat at Exeter last week, Macc were worthy winners, an emphatic victory with goals by Theo Archibald, Paddy Osadebe and Theo Vassell that left their manager beaming.
“Last week we were hit with a sucker-punch but today the lads played really well, stuck to their jobs and it was a really good performance,” said Campbell.
“It’s one for us to build on – if you have a strong foundation you can always do something in a game.
“They took their chances but there were still two or three times when we should have at least made the keeper work, we could have had a couple more goals but other than that they played really well, scored some fantastic goals, dug in well and it’s pleasing to see.
“I want Theo (Archibald) to keep his feet on the ground but I don’t know any keeper in the world who would have saved that, you can’t defend that, it was dipping at the last second and went right in the top corner, I’m pleased for him.”
Archibald’s strike came after half an hour of precious little goalmouth action when he curled a beauty into the top corner, following Ben Stephens’ cross-field ball to the Scot wide on the flank
Osadebe slotted in the second after Stephens’ neat through-ball and another new boy, Vassell, made it a hat-trick of home-debut goals with a header five minutes from time to leave Orient interim head coach Ross Embleton conceding his side had been second best throughout.
“We have to be capable of coming to places like this, where conditions are tough, because it’s only going to get tougher as the winter months come in,” he said.
“We didn’t do well enough today, we didn’t fight or scrap in the opening part of the game, we didn’t make ourselves hard to beat and we were well below our level in that respect today.
“I thought the first half was quiet, it took us a bit of time to get to grips with the wind but we had a couple of opportunities to get back into the game.
“We have to have an intent and an idea of what we want to do going forward. We need to be able to stay in the game a lot longer, not get too edgy or too panicky or chase the game.”
