Sunderland hit back for point at Ipswich

A second-half equaliser from Lynden Gooch earned Sunderland a point against Ipswich as an entertaining encounter ended 1-1 at Portman Road.

Roared on by a vocal home crowd, Ipswich got off to a dream start in the 15th minute when Danny Rowe’s touch found Luke Garbutt, who squeezed the ball home from a tight angle.

The Blues continued to press and in the 23rd minute Cole Skuse’s effort was cleared off the line before James Norwood’s hooked volley flew wide of the Sunderland goal.

Garbutt went close to extending Town’s advantage but his shot was saved by Jon McLaughlin after 37 minutes before the Everton loanee was forced off through injury shortly afterwards.

Sunderland’s Marc McNulty out-muscled Town skipper Luke Chambers by the touchline in the 64th minute and his cross from the left was slammed home by Gooch for the visitors’ equaliser.

Alan Judge saw a shot saved by McLaughlin in stoppage time as both sides pressed forward in the final minutes, but neither could find a winner.
