Late Clark Robertson goal lifts Rotherham to victory over AFC Wimbledon

Clark Robertson’s late goal gave Rotherham a deserved 2-1 win at AFC Wimbledon in their League One curtain-raiser.
The Millers, who are among the promotion favourites following relegation from the Championship last season, looked like being held to a draw after Freddie Ladapo’s opener was cancelled out by Joe Pigott’s header after the break.
But defender Robertson converted from a corner in the 84th minute to get Paul Warne’s side up and running.
Ladapo, the club’s record signing this summer, should have opened his account with only nine minutes on the clock but put his header from a yard out straight at goalkeeper Nik Tzanev, and Michael Smith and Matt Crooks also missed good opportunities to reward a strong Millers opening.
The former Plymouth striker did not make the same mistake just before the half-hour as, in an identical position, he hooked home Smith’s header back across goal.
It had been all Rotherham in the first half, but the Dons levelled with their first effort on target five minutes after the restart when Pigott converted a free header from a corner.
Rotherham should have gone back in front but Ladapo’s shot was somehow kept out on the line by Paul Kalambayi, but they were not to be denied as Robertson struck late on.
