MANCHESTER UNITED boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has implored club chiefs to make three transfers despite public comments contradicting that.

United are in dire need of a squad overhaul after a shocking season - and key figures at the club are distinctly aware of this.

The Red Devils finished sixth in the Premier League and will be plying their trade in the Europa League next year for the second time in three seasons.

For the club’s transfer plans, it has had a substantial impact on both incomings and departures - with Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka so far the only signings.

Several top players that have been targeted have turned their nose up, including the likes of Jadon Sancho, Kalidou Koulibaly and Declan Rice whereas United are facing up to the fact they could lose some stars, too.

But regardless of what happens, Solskjaer has demanded that the club snap up at least three more signings - according to the Manchester Evening News.

That contradicts comments he made yesterday where he said only two are being looked at.

Speaking to MUTV on Friday, Solskjaer delved into his transfer plans by saying: "I think we've been quite calm and good in the market, as we've got the right people and we're still working on a case or two.

“Of course, we're always looking to improve the squad and all over the summer I've been in touch with Joel [Glazer] and Ed [Woodward] and all the recruitment people and analysis people.”

There has been intense speculation over the likes of Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes.

The duo tick off two boxes Solskjaer is looking to snap up this summer as he looks to revitalise his squad.

But there have also been plans afoot to find a replacement to Ander Herrera - who departed for Paris St-Germain after his contract expired this summer.

That man is believed to be Sean Longstaff, MEN report, who would fit Solskjaer’s ethos of young, British talents.

"We want players who can get us off the edge of their seats as well," Solskjaer added on Friday.

"Both these players (James and Wan-Bissaka) have x-factors, real x-factors, and are great, humble human beings who are hard-working, hungry and just at the start of their carers. I'm sure the fans will be delighted when they see their progress.

"They are here now. Now it's up to them to take the opportunity and prove their worth.

“Of course, we don't expect them to set the world alight on the first day, but they are going to grow into bid and very good Manchester United players."

United have had a £70m bid rejected for Maguire while talks continue over Fernandes.
