Neymar's fight to hold the trademark rights to his name

The Court of Justice of The European Union will have to reach a conclusion regarding Neymar's spat with the European Union Intellectual Property Office.

The row stems from whether or not the latter can legally use the Brazilian's name as a brand after it was confirmed that EUIPO cancelled the 'Neymar' label that businessman Carlos Moreira used for his sports products, after the PSG star demanded that it should cease to exist.

Moreira laid the foundations in 2012 in an attempt to use the Brazilian's name for some of his sportswear such as 'Neymar', 'Neymar Footwear' and 'NJR Neymar JR' in Europe.

EUIPO gave him the green light at the time after there seemed to be no objections from anyone.

The situation changed dramatically, however, when Neymar himself attempted to register his own name as a brand.

As a result, EUIPO cancelled all brands relating to him in 2017 after the player's lawyers threatened them with legal action.

A final decision is yet to be made, however, which is why the European Court of Justice has been forced to get involved.
