Peterborough missed out on the play-offs despite signing off the League One campaign with a 3-1 success against Burton.
Darren Ferguson’s men were reliant on his former club, Doncaster, slipping up to sneak into the top six, but Rovers – bossed by ex-Posh man Grant McCann – took care of business against Coventry.
Ivan Toney saw a curling effort hit the bar before producing an exquisite pass that allowed Joe Ward to tap in a 19th minute opener.
Their lead doubled as Burton defender John Brayford steered a fine Jason Naismith delivery into his own net when having Toney breathing down his neck.
But no sooner had the celebrations died down when news filtered through of Doncaster taking the lead against Coventry.
Lee Tomlin and substitute Siriki Dembele were both denied further Posh goals by Albion keeper Bradley Collins and the visitors then halved their arrears late on as substitute Alex Bradley finished at the second attempt in the 84th minute.
But Toney had the final say when lashing in a Posh clincher with two minutes to go.
