Queen of the South set for relegation play-offs after defeat by Partick Thistle

Partick Thistle condemned Queen of the South to the Ladbrokes Championship relegation play-off semi-finals following a 3-0 victory at Palmerston Park.
Thistle started the day on 40 points in seventh, two clear of the Doonhamers immediately below them and needed to avoid defeat to ensure safety – doing so in style to extend their impressive recent run of just one loss in their last seven league matches.
Lewis Mansell fired the visitors in front in the 14th minute when he got on the end of a Blair Spittal cross and despite a fine save from Jack Leighfield, the striker slammed home the rebound.
Scott McDonald grabbed his seventh goal of the season just before half-time when Scott Mercer’s clearance ricocheted off the striker and into the net, with Thistle sealing their third win in four games through Stuart Bannigan’s second-half penalty.
After Alloa’s 1-1 draw with Ayr, Queen of the South will take on Montrose in the play-off semi-final in a bid to retain their Championship status, with the first leg on Tuesday.
