CHRIS SMALLING was given a rough ride last night and it didn't get much smoother for him while heading into Manchester today.
Less than 24 hours after his side crashed to a 2-0 defeat against rivals Man City, the England defender was pulled over by police for a random safety inspection.
Smalling was pulled over by police on his way to Manchester on Thursday afternoon
Smalling, 29, was driving in his blacked out Mercedes worth £100,000 when he was stopped.
He chatted to police for around five minutes before being allowed to go on his way.
The inspection is designed to stop people using illegal tinted windows, illegal number plates, worn tyres and tax and insurance checks.
Police were stopping and checking other random vehicles in the same area.
Smalling looked far from happy to be pulled over and it is no surprise following United's seventh defeat in their last nine matches.
It has left them with a uphill battle to salvage their hopes of Champions League qualification as they sit three points adrift of Chelsea in fourth.
But they know they can keep their European dream alive if they beat Maurizio Sarri's men at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side then have winnable clashes at Huddersfield and at home to Cardiff before they can begin their big summer clear out.
Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia are just some of the names on the chopping board.
Smalling was driving in his Mercedes worth a whopping £100,000 when he was stopped
