Wally Downes hails Wimbledon character after vital point at Luton

AFC Wimbledon boss Wally Downes was bursting with pride after his side boosted their survival hopes with a stoppage-time equaliser to draw 2-2 at leaders Luton.

Steve Seddon’s goal with virtually the last kick secured a precious point in the Dons’ relegation fight and moved them within one point of safety.

Luton went ahead through Elliot Lee, Joe Pigott equalised, but James Collins restored the lead before the break and then Seddon struck.

Downes said: “We came and gave Luton a game and we must be proud of that as the boys worked their socks off.

“We weren’t physical enough in the first half. Luton are a good footballing side and very mobile but still very physical.

“We’ve got some young boys in the side just out of Under-23 and academy football and this will be a lesson to them.

“Footballing sides can still put their foot in an be very physical. I mentioned this at half-time and we improved the physical side of our game in the second half and matched them and battled them.

“At 2-1 we were pushing and pushing and I told the team not to stop.

“How big is this point? We’ll know on the last day of the season. Up to now it’s just another point.”

Meanwhile, Town chief Mick Harford preferred to look at the positives as his side moved three points in front of Barnsley with two games to go.

He said: “It’s one point gained, if you look at it on the other side of the coin.

“We needed four, five points to get us out of this league, so one point and if we put in a performance like that over the next two games we’ll be fine.

“I thought we were brilliant in terms of possession, chances created, the way we moved the ball around, and we could have been out of sight before half time.

“We weren’t clinical enough, that’s my only criticism of the lads. We got in the final third, create all kinds of chances, I think it was 24, 25 shots at the target, but we need to be a bit more clinical.”
