Lowe hails Bury character in Northampton victory

Delighted Bury boss Ryan Lowe hailed his team’s fighting spirit as they came from behind to defeat mid-table Northampton 3-1.

Despite ongoing off-field issues, including the late payment of wages, goals from Chris Stokes, Danny Mayor and Nicky Maynard helped the Shakers back into the automatic promotion places.

Lowe said: “I must admit after 25 or 30 minutes, I was thinking to myself ‘what am I doing here today?’

“Nothing seemed to be going right for us, but fair play to the players, they got back into it briliantly.

“I love it here, and I know very well the players do too.

“Some of them are quite emotionally drained, given some of the circumstances they’re playing under, but credit to them all for showing fight, passion, and the sheer will power to win.

“There are tough circumstances going on here, but we are rallying through and we’re all in this together right now.

“We’re battling away to try and achieve something here.

“We had a few twitchy moments today, but we’ve come through it once again.

“I’ll take the mistakes along the way as long as we keep scoring goals and moving towards our ultimate goal.”

Shay Facey and former Bury midfielder David Buchanan had both gone close before the Cobblers took the lead.

An unmarked Andy Williams easily headed in Sam Foley’s cross.

The Shakers then levelled six minutes before the break as Stokes side-footed home Nicky Adams’ cross.

The hosts took the lead in the 65th minute as midfielder Mayor curled home from 15 yards.

Maynard slid in Adams’ cross deep in added time as the Shakers wrapped up a deserved win.

Northampton boss Keith Curle admitted Bury have set a high standard this season, and he aspires to reach that next time around.

He said: “I did think the scoreline was a little harsh, we competed well against a really good Bury side.

“Once we conceded before half-time, I could see we could have a problem.

“Bury are a very good side and have performed well in this division all season.

“They have lots of quality players right across the pitch.

“We were dealing with their threat relatively well until they scored, and so that’s a lesson for us.

“I suppose the big moment was when Andy Williams missed a one-on-one when it was still 1-1.

“Sometimes those moments go for you, sometimes they don’t.

“This is the challenge for us next season now. We’ve got to look at teams like Bury and learn from what they’re good at.”
