Neale Marmon talks up Yeovil’s survival chances despite defeat at Crewe

Neale Marmon is convinced Yeovil can make up ground on their relegation rivals despite their winless run stretching to eight games with a 2-0 defeat at Crewe.

Caretaker boss Marmon has a tough job on his hands and will need more than his players offered at Gresty Road where goals from Charlie Kirk and Tom Lowery secured the points for Crewe.

Things went from bad to worse for Yeovil, who had Adel Gafaiti sent off for an off-the-ball incident involving veteran defender Nicky Hunt in the second half.

Marmon is still seeking his first win after four games in charge, with 23rd-placed Yeovil sitting two points adrift of Macclesfield in the last position of safety in League Two.

He said: “Our game-plan went out the window and we were on the back foot after an early mistake.

“We matched Crewe after the first goal but then got involved in a stupid off-the-ball incident.

“We have got to get a result and get some positivity in the club. The takeover has been given the green light and Yeovil is begging for it for a number of years.

“The fans should not be deterred by today’s result and we’ve still got a massive chance to stay in the Football League.”

Yeovil enjoyed plenty of possession in the first half but their only effort of note was Alex Fisher’s glancing header which flew past the far post.

After the break Sessi D’Almeida made Will Jaaskelainen work to turn away his low drive and Crewe’s debutant keeper did well to palm over a Tristan Abrahams effort.

But the Glovers crumbled after Gafaiti’s straight red.

Crewe were far from inspired but once young midfielder Lowery tapped in his first senior goal after Kirk and Chris Porter’s efforts were thwarted, the game was over.

With his side in mid-table, David Artell was making plans for next season by taking the opportunity to try out a couple of Crewe’s youngsters. As well as Jaaskelainen, who is the son of former Bolton keeper Jussi, defender Billy Sass-Davies, 19, was handed only his second senior start.

Crewe boss Artell said: “Will pulled off a great save and I thought he was never going to be in trouble and Billy played the right way too.

“I asked Tommy (Lowery) how many games he has played and told him you can’t be just a tidy midfielder without scoring. So hopefully he will get the bug now he has scored his first goal.

“If we had won by four, five or six there would have been no complaints.”
