Dom Telford scored a brace as Bury put their off-the-field problems behind them to boost their automatic promotion hopes with a 2-0 win over Colchester United at Gigg Lane.
Shakers defender Will Aimson cleared off the line inside the opening minute and goalkeeper Joe Murphy brilliantly tipped over a long-range effort from Colchester’s Tom Lapslie.
But Bury warmed to the task and U’s right-back Ryan Jackson almost turned Nicky Adams’ cross into his own net and Frankie Kent headed away from under his own bar, as the hosts finished the first half well.
Colchester goalkeeper Rene Gilmartin denied Telford just after the break before Bury went ahead five minutes after half-time when Telford nodded in from close range, after Nicky Maynard had headed Adams’ corner into his path.
Murphy denied Jackson and Sam Saunders clattered the crossbar with a long-range effort, as Colchester chased an equaliser.
But soon after Gilmartin had denied Maynard, Bury wrapped up their victory in the 66th minute when Telford stooped to head home his second goal of the game from Maynard’s accurate cross.
