Portsmouth strengthen promotion push after easing past struggling Rochdale

Oli Hawkins scored his 10th goal of the season to set promotion-chasing Portsmouth on course for a fifth-straight League One win as they beat Rochdale 4-1.
Striker Hawkins headed Pompey in front in the 21st minute from Jamal Lowe’s pin-point cross.
Captain Brett Pitman made it 2-0 from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time after Nathan Thompson had been brought down in the box.
Struggling Dale got themselves back into the game when Aaron Wilbraham raced in behind a static Pompey defence to reduce the deficit.
But Gareth Evans’s header after 62 minutes ended the visitors’ hopes of an unlikely comeback.
Lowe wrapped up a convincing victory with 11 minutes remaining, finishing coolly after being played through by Matt Clarke.
The victory leaves Pompey two points behind second-placed Barnsley with a game in hand.
Dale are now just one point and one place above the relegation zone.
