Mansfield dealt promotion setback at Northampton

Mansfield’s promotion charge suffered a setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Northampton on Saturday.
Mal Benning scored direct from a corner to give the Stags the perfect start, but Sam Foley’s second-half header saw them drop a place to third in Sky Bet League Two.
Aaron Pierre headed an early chance wide, yet it was Mansfield who struck against the run of play after 11 minutes, when Benning’s corner somehow beat everyone and found the back of the net.
Sam Hoskins had a shot blocked for the Cobblers and Jordan Turnbull also went close, but the first half was otherwise devoid of goalmouth action.
It was more of the same in the second period until Northampton restored parity with a goal out of nothing after 69 minutes, Foley timing his run and jump perfectly to head in Scott Pollock’s corner.
Danny Rose came off the bench to miss two late chances for a winner, heading wide when unmarked and then lofting over the crossbar, as Mansfield were made to settle for a point.
