Pearce scores winner as Charlton keep play-off push on track

Jason Pearce scored a first-half winner as promotion-chasing Charlton earned a third straight win with a 1-0 victory at Wycombe.
The Addicks skipper slotted home from Josh Cullen’s 35th-minute cross to all but guarantee a top six finish for the London club.
Igor Vetokele had earlier been denied by a fine save from Ryan Allsop after being set up by Lyle Taylor.
But Wycombe, who have serious relegation concerns after extending their winless run to 12 games, should have rescued a point.
Adebayo Akinfenwa saw a header from Nick Freeman’s cross go over while Scott Kashket’s effort from point-blank range hit Charlton keeper Dillon Phillips at the start of the second half.
Akinfenwa then had another header saved by Phillips who also denied Chairboys captain Adam El-Abd as Wycombe’s misfortune in front of goal continued.
Charlton should have sealed victory late on when Pearce’s header from Cullen’s corner was kept out by Allsop moments after Vetokele had also headed wide.
