Ayr moved up to third in the Ladbrokes Championship with a 1-0 victory over Queen of the South.
The league’s top-scorer Lawrence Shankland struck his 23rd goal of the season to fire the hosts ahead from the penalty spot in the 43rd minute after Robbie Crawford had been brought down by Josh Todd.
Earlier in the half, the second highest scorer in the league – Queen of the South’s Stephen Dobbie – was forced off through injury.
In his absence, the visitors were unable to get back on level terms. Ian McGrath missed a header from close range before Andy Stirling’s effort was saved by Ross Doohan.
McGrath’s header wide six minutes from time was the last real chance for Queen of the South, who remain seventh but are now just three points above bottom-placed Falkirk.
