Stendel frustrated by Barnsley display as promotion hopes are hit by Burton loss

Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel was disappointed in his side’s performance as he watched their twenty game unbeaten run in League One come to an end with a 3-1 defeat away at Burton.

It was a result which dents Barnsley’s hopes of automatic promotion, leaving them level on points with third-placed Sunderland having played two games more.

The Tykes were a goal down just five minutes in as Jamie Allen profited from a spill by Adam Davies to poke home and, although Stendel’s men pushed for an equaliser, Liam Boyce and Marcus Harness sealed victory for the home side either side of a Cauley Woodrow penalty

Those three goals came in the last ten minutes of an entertaining encounter.

“It’s a disappointing result” said Stendel. “But also the performance. I think that we fight for 90 or 95 minutes but it was not enough to win today.

“The goals were too easy for Burton. I don’t think they were much better than us but they were more effective. They scored and we created less chances to score. All of the pressure that we had we could not get in the chances to score and when we were defending as we did for the last two goal then you win no games.”

The Tykes boss admitted that the early Burton goal gave the Brewers a big lift and made it harder for his side having to chase the game.

“It is good for Burton getting the goal after five minutes” he said. “After ten minutes we control the game and, in my opinion Burton were so much under pressure, we have a lot of situations and in the moment we didn’t score. In the second half we need too much time to control the game and create chances and made it too easy for them.”

For Albion boss Nigel Clough it was a third straight win for his side and a thoroughly satisfying one.

“It was a very high standard League One game,” Clough said. “You can see why Barnsley are up there challenging and going for automatic promotion because they are such a good team.

“The lovely thing today is that we withstood the pressure they put us under and we caused them problems when we had the opportunity to.

“We started the game brilliantly and got the goal. When we got the second goal we look as though we are cruising and then we get a penalty against us that I am still waiting to find somebody who knows what it was for.

“Despite having a couple of decisions gone against us today we still got the three points and just about deserved it”
