Salford go top and relegate Maidstone

Adam Rooney’s brace moved Salford to the top of the Vanarama National League and relegated opponents Maidstone.
Rooney looked threatening from the off and scored his first goal since the start of December in the 13th minute with a low shot into the bottom left-hand corner.
Nathan Pond was just wide from a 26th-minute corner and Scott Wiseman came agonisingly close to a second when his shot came back off a post and trickled along the goal-line before being cleared.
Rooney did double Salford’s advantage before the break, tapping in Wiseman’s inviting cross.
Maidstone improved after the break but failed to test goalkeeper Chris Neal.
Rooney cleared the crossbar after 78 minutes as he looked to complete his hat-trick but Salford comfortably held on.
