Micky Mellon: Tranmere can learn from defeat at Oldham

Tranmere boss Micky Mellon insisted his team’s 2-0 defeat at Oldham would provide valuable lessons for their promotion bid during the rest of the League Two campaign.
Rovers had won seven straight league games before being consigned to defeat by Callum Lang’s excellent double, but they still have every chance of a top-three finish.
Lang grabbed his first goal on seven minutes as he cut in from the left and hit a sweet right-footed shot into the bottom corner.
Tranmere struggled to create clear chances and Oldham struck again after 61 minutes when Lang ran at the visiting defence and slotted inside the far post for his 14th goal of the season.
Mellon said: “We’ve worked very hard to get where we are in the table and one result doesn’t change that.
“What it does do is remind people that we still have a lot of work to do because tonight we have let down a massive fan base who followed us here.
“We are still in a fantastic position. We will learn, go through things to make sure we train well and then move forward again.
“There’s a tremendous amount of massive games ahead of us this season and tonight showed everyone the type of challenge we are going to face.
“That’s what we will tell the players, but every credit to Oldham because they defended their 18-yard box very well and their defending overall was fantastic.
“We are disappointed by the goals we gave away and disappointed that we didn’t have more imagination around the box.
“We gave it everything, but we will need to be better in the games coming up.”
Oldham have secured back-to-back wins since Pete Wild replaced Paul Scholes as head coach to the end of the season.
Wild said: “The players implemented our plan and showed heart, desire and work rate.
“Oldham people will forgive everything if you work as hard as you can, and that’s what the players did tonight.
“It’s amazing what hard work can achieve. Tranmere deserve credit because they are a good team who threw everything at us, but our back four withstood them.
“We had to be strong, but it was good to get back to winning ways on Saturday and now we’ve followed it up a few days later.
“My remit is to put smiles on people’s faces and obviously results and performances make a big difference in achieving that.
“We wanted to get back into the top half as soon as possible, which we’ve done, but there are seven games left to see what we can achieve.
“I haven’t thought beyond the rest of the season, but I enjoy the challenge and it’s good experience to pit my wits at league level.”
