Colin Calderwood salutes ‘accomplished’ Cambridge display

Buoyant Cambridge boss Colin Calderwood saluted an “accomplished” performance from his team as they triumphed 3-0 at automatic promotion-chasers Bury.

The U’s dominated on the night and eased their lingering relegation fears thanks to a well-deserved first win in five matches.

It was a victory which extended the gap between the U’s and the drop zone to nine points.

Calderwood said: “That was a terrific effort from all the players.

“Once we’d got the second goal shortly before half-time we were in control.

“Overall I’m delighted because that was a really accomplished away performance, and it was one we needed.

“It’s pleasing for the staff and the fans to witness effort like that gain rewards, and of course the fans will be delighted.

“This is a really important three points for us, and it came courtesy of the players going that extra mile time and again.

“It was a really good response to the defeat at the weekend.

“As staff it featured everything you’d want from your team. There was desire, effort and a real will to win.

“Now we need to build on this result and make it a positive end to the season for everyone.”

Alex Jones struck first for the visitors, slotting home low past Joe Murphy.

It was two-nil just past the half-hour mark as ex-Bury loanee David Amoo latched onto Jevani Brown’s precise throughball before drilling confidently past Murphy.

The hosts almost halved the deficit just before the break through Nicky Maynard, before Amoo had the ball in the back of the Bury net again in the 50th minute, but he had pounced from an offside position.

It was all over in the 72nd minute when George Maris side-footed neatly into the corner.

Bury boss Ryan Lowe lamented a second home defeat in just four days, amid a backdrop of uncertainty at Gigg Lane thanks to the ‘internal financial restrictions’ revealed by the club prior to the match.

Lowe said: “Of course that’s not the result we wanted. It’s not the one we like at all.

“It wasn’t for the lack of trying, but there was a distinct lack of quality at times tonight.

“There were too many stray passes, and we just weren’t at it all game with our decision-making.

“We don’t become a bad team overnight, though, and I will never come out after a game and slag my players off.

“We’re on 40 games now, and though it is very disappointing at the moment, we won’t be giving up when we’re third in the league.

“That’s still only our third home defeat of the season don’t forget.

“My players have been different class all season.

“We’re still in a fantastic position to go and kick on from here.

“It’s important we get that spark back now ahead of the game at Carlisle at the weekend.”
